Project Overview
Ferrycarrig has been appointed by Transport for NSW to deliver the Wentworth Avenue and Baker Street Intersection Upgrade project in the Bayside LGA.
The upgrade is part of Transport for NSW’s Pinch Point Program that will improve the existing Wentworth Avenue and Baker Street Intersection which is currently subject to traffic congestion.
The multidisciplinary project involves utility modifications including electrical, communications, and gas utility infrastructure modifications, the installation of stormwater infrastructure, and the relocation of a watermain.
The upgrade also involved roadworks including pavement, kerb, and gutter as well as the installation of a full new set of traffic lights, traffic signs, line marking, signposts, and all associated fixtures for the new roads.
In addition, Ferrycarrig’s in-house Traffic Management Team delivered all traffic control requirements associated with the works.
The scope of work included the construction of the following items:
- Utility modifications including communications and gas civil trenching works for Telstra, Optus, Vocus, NBN, TPG, and Jemena with low- pressure and high-pressure pipes, electrical modifications in the nearby Ausgrid LV, HV, and SL networks
- Stormwater network with 100 metres of new water pipes with 19 old and new pits associated, kerb and gutter, trench drains
- Road works involving milling and re-sheeting areas, full depth hbb and pavement areas, traffic signs, line marking, signposts, and all associated fixtures for the new roads
- Installation of a full new set of traffic lights
The project presented a number of challenges that will need to be carefully planned and managed. There were several specific challenges to be overcome:
- Tight working conditions under live, heavy traffic conditions. Ferrycarrig’s in-house traffic control team played an important role in enabling works to be completed and maintaining traffic flows
- There were a large number of utilities to be coordinated and relocated requiring 3D modelling of the area to enable staging of works
Ongoing community and stakeholder engagement, accurate and detailed planning and efficient staging of the works will be the basis for successful and timely project completion.
Considerate solutions designed to minimise impacts to road users and the local community were key to successful project delivery. The majority of the works were scheduled to be undertaken at night to minimise inconvenience to road users.
These works will ensure better traffic flow for the local community and other motorists moving through this major intersection, resulting in safer and more reliable journeys for motorists and pedestrians travelling through the busy area.
