Project Overview
Ferrycarrig was appointed to carry out remediation, utilities installation and civil construction works for the construction of the Equinix SY9 Data Centre facility by principal contractor AW Edwards.
The main works Ferrycarrig was contracted to perform comprised:
- Site clearance and demolition of existing structures, including removal of trees and buildings
- Removal of all existing hardstand containing asbestos
- Remediation of site, including the excavation of 30,000T of asbestos
contaminated material and installation of a capping layer with 60,000T of imported sandstone - Installation of more than 1,000 metres of stormwater network, up to 1,050mm in diameter and 4 meters deep
- Installation of 2 x stormwater treatment systems to a depth of 5 metres
- Installation of several kilometres of electrical and communication conduits
- Construction of a 500 metre retaining wall, including magnum stone and block wall
- Installation of an inground ventilation layer under the main building
- Construction of a permanent access road and ring road with heavy duty pavement, including all the footpaths around the future Data Centre
During its peak operational phase, Ferrycarrig mobilized 10 work crews alongside its own in-house traffic management team to deliver this scope. The project team assisted with design support to deliver an efficient, staged program of works that minimized the need for rework.
Due to the successful execution of the above-mentioned scope, Ferrycarrig was awarded an additional contract by AW Edwards to deliver on the Equinix SY9 Data Centre. This involved overseeing the design and construction of the power connection to the Centre, including laying a 1.8km 11kV feeder comprising 1.6 km of traditional trenching and a 200m under-bore installation, as well as establishing kiosk substations. Ferrycarrig implemented a self delivery project model, providing an end-to-end service, including traffic control, design development, survey, potholing, construction and commissioning.
The project team faced several key challenges. These included adhering to a demanding client schedule, procuring overseas-sourced products such as cables and substations, and effectively managing soil and groundwater contamination on-site.
