Stage 2 includes connections from Stage 1 at cove street, Birchgrove, to the Warringah Freeway near North Sydney, tunnelling under Sydney harbour and the complete tunnel fit-out. This is a twin tunnel with 3 lanes in both directions, 6.5km in length, and will see the link of the Rozelle interchange to the Warringah Freeway to transform Sydney Metro Road network. This project is unique as it will have 2 x tunnel boring machines (TBMS).

Ferrycarrig Scope of Work
Following on from the successful delivery of electrical work in December-February 2024 on the same project (Ridge Street, 11kv). Ferrycarrig have been selected as the preferred contractor to deliver the supply and installation of the 33kv power required for the Western Harbour tunnel which will connect to the Ausgrid Substation in Rozelle. The scope of work will involve a combination of open cut trenching and trenchless works along 2.5km route (2 x 200mm, 4 x 63mm). The job will also include the installation of 2 joint bays and the supply and installation of the 33kv cabling into the zone substation and associated commissioning. Comms and fibre cable will also be installed as part of the work scope.

Key Challenges

  • Condensed housing on some narrow streets will require assurance in locating property services and logistics planning to maintain access to local housing.
  • Traffic control and ROL planning will be the responsibility of our client but will require a lot of coordination to conduct the works in a safe manner at minimal impact to the community.
  • Some areas of the job will have rock to be removed along the route, limitations around noise and vibration in the construction method will be primary consideration.
  • Working around live in ground services and overhead services along the route will require coordination with utility authorities and methods to be carefully considered.
  • Minimise the impact of the Works on the electricity supply to customers and interruptions to supply must be avoided, where possible.

The award of this project is a testament to the previous works carried out by our work crews on the Rozelle Interchange, M6 Stage 1, Warringah Freeway and Sydney Fishmarkets projects specifically which have been a thorough demonstration of our ability to deliver complex electrical works for major infrastructure projects in this area.

The successful delivery of this project will further build on our strong reputation in delivering of Transmission projects on the Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Transgrid Networks.
